The Fallasburg post office was built in 1851 and was the home of John M. Waters, who was the postmaster at the time. John Waters also served as a Justice of the Peace and was a real estate developer in Vergennes Township. The post office was operational until 1901. The slow end of the post office was a result of many converging factors, the primary one being local economic decline. The village lost the sawmill in 1878, and the gristmill also fell quickly into decline due to the introduction of the railway in Lowell. These, combined with the nationwide consolidation of small, fourth-class post offices closed in favor of Rural Free Delivery (RFD) routes and main industries moving to Lowell, then led to a decline in the town’s population, ultimately leaving Fallasburg on the outskirts rather than a ‘central station ’. This effect reduced overall commerce, activity, and popularity in Fallasburg and ultimately led to the closure of the post office. Today, this is a private residence – please do not disturb occupants or walk on the property.
